On June 11, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar presented a digitally restored copy of the classic Myanmar film *Thu Chit* to the families of the film’s lead actors as a gesture of goodwill. The restored digital version was handed over by Minister Counsellor Dr. Zheng Zhihong to the family members of U Nyunt Maung and Daw May Myint, the film’s leading stars.
The film’s restoration was undertaken by China in response to Myanmar’s request, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During the ceremony, Dr. Zheng highlighted that the restored film had been officially transferred earlier this year in March and was re-screened at a special event, which was met with enthusiastic support from Myanmar audiences. He further emphasized China’s ongoing commitment to enhancing cultural exchanges and cooperation in film and broadcasting between the two nations.
U Thiha Aung, the grandson of the lead actors and recipient of the restored film, expressed his gratitude for China’s efforts. He noted that the restoration of *Thu Chit* allows the Myanmar public to reconnect with the cultural traditions, lifestyle, and geographical features of Myanmar in the 1950s. He also expressed the family’s deep appreciation for the opportunity to view their grandparents’ work in such a vivid and dignified way, and their desire to contribute to the continued strengthening of Myanmar-China friendship.
*Thu Chit*, originally released in 1951, depicts the lives of Myanmar farmers. The film was well-received by Chinese audiences when it was screened at the Asian Film Week in China in 1957.
