A Malaysian man is questioning the future of his relationship after his long-term girlfriend accused him of being stingy, despite years of spending generously on her. The man, who shared his story anonymously through local media, revealed that he has been dating his girlfriend for seven years. Throughout this time, he said he has always paid for their dates, fuel, parking, and other shared expenses.
According to him, he never failed to give her gifts on special occasions such as their anniversary, Valentine’s Day, her birthday, and New Year’s Eve. Instead of picking gifts himself, he preferred transferring money directly into her bank account so she could choose what she liked. For her birthday, he said he typically sent her around RM1,200, and had been increasing the amount each year.
Beyond gifts, he also lent her money on several occasions. On New Year’s Eve in 2022, his girlfriend wanted to dye her hair at an upscale salon but could not afford the RM1,600 cost. He agreed to lend her the money after she promised to repay him in instalments. In October 2024, he lent her more than RM3,000 so she could take a professional exam for a job promotion, again based on a promise that she would repay him later.
However, the woman did not pay him back. Instead, she accused him of being tight-fisted. The man said he was shocked by the accusation, especially since she often expressed envy over friends who received luxury handbags worth between RM5,000 and RM15,000 from their husbands each year. He shared that he could afford gifts in the RM1,500 to RM2,500 range and was willing to buy something within that budget, but she was not satisfied and insisted on more expensive presents. He once suggested she use the birthday money he gave her to buy a handbag or spend it on skincare or makeup, but she refused.
The man also recounted that she accused him of not loving her enough when he proposed splitting travel costs, offering to cover half if she paid the other half. He said her cold reaction left him disheartened.
Now, after years of shared history, including enduring the pandemic lockdown together, the man is unsure whether to stay in the relationship or walk away. He said breaking up feels like a shame after so many memories, but staying feels exhausting.
