The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine has received a historic \$50 million anonymous donation, the largest single gift in the university’s 200-year history. This significant contribution will help advance MUSC’s mission to improve public health and tackle South Carolina’s most urgent health issues.
The donation comes at a crucial time, as the state faces serious health challenges and a rapidly aging population. The funds will support the College of Medicine’s efforts to innovate in medical education and expand opportunities for training more doctors, addressing South Carolina’s ongoing shortage of healthcare providers. This gift will also help MUSC attract and retain top physicians, faculty, and researchers, ultimately benefiting students, patients, and communities.
MUSC President Dr. David J. Cole expressed his gratitude, stating, “For two centuries, MUSC has been a leader in healthcare in South Carolina. With rising chronic disease rates, the need for bold action has never been more urgent. This generous gift will allow us to advance medical education, foster innovation, and improve health outcomes for all South Carolinians in the next century.”
Dr. Terrence E. Steyer, Dean of the College of Medicine, added, “This gift reflects the power of collaboration and the shared belief that we can transform healthcare in South Carolina. It will help us create a top-tier learning environment for our students and faculty while supporting groundbreaking research and clinical programs that will benefit patients across the state and beyond.”
In line with this vision, construction is underway for a new building that will serve as a hub for collaboration and innovation, furthering MUSC’s mission of training future doctors and advancing life-saving treatments.
MUSC Board of Trustees Chairman Charles W. Schulze remarked, “This gift is more than just a donation; it’s an investment in the future health of our state. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and vision of these anonymous donors, which will help build a healthier future for South Carolina.”
MUSC is committed to honoring the donors’ wishes for anonymity, ensuring that their legacy will positively impact South Carolinians for generations to come.
