Kennesaw State Alumnus Brandon Gasaway Commissioned for GYSO Work

by Lily Brown

Brandon Gasaway’s journey with the Greater Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) dates back to his high school years, long before he enrolled at Kennesaw State University (KSU). During that time, Gasaway completed a capstone project focused on conducting with the GYSO Symphony, guided by Dr. Nathaniel Parker, GYSO’s artistic and executive director and KSU’s director of orchestral studies.

Dr. Parker praised Gasaway’s musical talents, describing his compositions as “polished, professional, structurally sound, and artistically powerful.” He added, “Brandon has demonstrated the ability to compose meaningful works for various orchestras, including string ensembles, symphony orchestras, and educational groups. His ability to write effectively for such a wide range of ensembles showcases his unique gift.”

Gasaway, a 2024 graduate of Kennesaw State University, earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in composition. His time at KSU allowed him to develop a distinctive compositional style, supported by mentorship, performance opportunities, and academic accolades.

One of his most notable experiences came from working with the University Philharmonic Orchestra. Dr. Nancy Conley, the orchestra’s director, referred to Gasaway as the ensemble’s “unofficial composer in residence.” Under his guidance, the orchestra premiered four of his compositions: A Fighting Spirit, Stargazing, The American Frontier, and Until We Meet Again. Conley expressed the value of this direct collaboration, noting the enriching experience for both the musicians and Gasaway himself.

His farewell composition, Until We Meet Again, served as a tribute to the Philharmonic and Dr. Conley. His final work with the ensemble, Chaotic Concoction, premiered in April 2025.

Gasaway’s career gained further momentum after he won the KSU 2020–21 Composition Competition for his piece, Fairy Tale Overture, which he began composing in high school. Although COVID-19 delays pushed its debut, it premiered in March 2022 with the KSU Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, he also won the Bailey School of Music Composition Competition and was honored as the 2024 Presser Scholar, one of the highest distinctions for undergraduate music students.

Currently based in Colorado Springs, Gasaway works as the music librarian for the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. He continues to compose and conduct, with his latest work, The Wayfinder, premiering with the seventh-grade orchestra at Jenkins Middle School.
