A Kansas farmer has created a memorable 20th anniversary surprise for his wife by turning their farm into a canvas of love.
As his marriage milestone approached, Jesse Blasi decided to carve a special message for his wife, Sarah, in their wheat field in Pratt. Inspired by a similar gesture made by another local farmer, Lee Wilson, who grew a sunflower field for his wife two years ago, Jesse thought, “I could do that for Sarah.”
Jesse, who has extensive experience with advanced farming technology, used a method called “multi-varietal prescription planting” to plant two different types of wheat — white and red. With the help of a John Deere air seeder, he began the project in October, planting more than 65 million red wheat seeds to form the letters of the message.
The task was not easy, especially keeping it a secret from Sarah. As Jesse received calls from local farmers asking about the agricultural art, it became increasingly difficult to maintain the surprise. The couple, who met while attending Kansas State University, have been together for 20 years.
On their anniversary, Jesse took Sarah up in a small plane to reveal the message, which read, “Jesse + Sarah 20 Years.” The message spanned half a mile wide and a mile long in their wheat field.
A video of the reveal captured Sarah’s emotional reaction to the thoughtful gesture. “That’s Jesse Blasi love, that’s farmer love right there,” she said.
Jesse shared, “I knew it would make her smile. That was kinda the whole goal — to get the little grin out of her that I like.”
The couple, who are parents to two daughters — Reagan, 14, and Avery, 12 — often refer to their girls as their “best crop.” Jesse humorously added, “Even though I’m the farmer, she grows the best crop,” in reference to the births of their daughters.
Sarah described Jesse as having a true “farmer’s heart,” noting that farmers tend to show their love through acts of service. “Just him doing something like this shows — it’s just extra, it’s just a little bit extra!” she said.
Jesse’s anniversary message will remain visible in the field until the wheat is harvested later this fall, alongside the farm’s other crops.
