Bishop Peter Collins recently led a special Mass to celebrate marriage across the Diocese of East Anglia, bringing together couples ranging from those marking their first wedding anniversary to those celebrating an impressive 65 years together.
During the Mass, a heartfelt moment saw all married couples present stand to renew their wedding vows, reaffirming their love and commitment to one another. This moving gesture was observed by family, friends, and fellow members of the diocesan community.
The event was organized by Dr. Antonia Braithwaite, the Diocese’s Marriage and Family Life Coordinator. A collection was taken during the service to support the ongoing work of the Marriage and Family Life Commission, which nurtures the vocation of marriage in the region.
The readings chosen for the service highlighted the sacred nature of marriage. The first reading, from Tobit 8:4b-8, featured a prayer of trust and unity shared by Tobias and Sarah on their wedding night, emphasizing marriage as a covenant based on faith and mutual support. The Gospel reading from 1 John 4:8b, 11 reminded attendees that “God is love” and that love for one another reflects God’s nature, a central calling for married couples.
Following the Mass, guests gathered in the narthex to enjoy cake and refreshments. Bishop Peter took the opportunity to personally congratulate couples and families, offering words of encouragement and prayers.
Among the couples were those celebrating significant anniversaries, including one couple marking 65 years of marriage. A newlywed couple, celebrating their first anniversary, also received warm applause, symbolizing the ongoing journey of love and new beginnings.
The event served as a joyful and prayerful celebration of the enduring vocation of marriage, honoring the strength and commitment of Catholic couples in the Diocese of East Anglia.
