On Tuesday, June 10, Gayle King, 70, appeared on CBS Mornings to share a surprising story about crashing a wedding last month while on assignment for Oprah Daily. The incident, which involved King and Oprah Daily Creative Director Adam Glassman, took an unexpected turn when the couple whose wedding they crashed, Nicolaus Wegrzyn and Matt Kaplon, joined King on set.
King expressed her excitement at meeting the couple, recalling the moment when the hotel staff had initially discouraged her from attending, saying they didn’t want any disruptions. “They told us someone had already crashed the wedding earlier, which I didn’t believe,” King said. “But now, here you are!”
Kaplon reassured King, saying, “No, you were the only one,” putting her at ease about the situation.
When asked about their reaction to the unexpected visit, Kaplon shared, “We just remember hearing, ‘We’re looking for Nick and Matt,’ and we turned and were like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s Gayle King.’” He added that their guests were equally shocked and excited to see the famous broadcaster at the wedding.
Wegrzyn also recalled the moment with a smile, saying, “I think our initial reaction was, ‘We have to tell our moms.’”
King, who admitted to feeling a little embarrassed about her attire—a casual sweatsuit—explained that she was careful not to take away from the couple’s special day. “We weren’t dressed for the occasion, but you two looked great in white. I told Adam, ‘If they’re mad at us, we’ll apologize and leave quickly,’” King said. “We didn’t want to steal the moment.”
However, the couple reassured King that they had no issue with the surprise visit. Wegrzyn said, “No, we’ve gotten to relive that moment every day. It was the best day of our lives, so why not relive it?” Kaplon echoed his sentiments, adding, “We’re just so grateful. You brought so much more joy to that day.”
Interestingly, some of the wedding guests initially thought the surprise appearance had been planned by the couple. Kaplon shared, “My boss was like, ‘I didn’t know you knew Gayle King.’”
Reflecting on the moment, Kaplon had previously told PEOPLE that the experience was “incredible” and praised King and Glassman as “treats” to have at the wedding. It seems that the unexpected wedding crash turned out to be a joyful, unforgettable memory for everyone involved.
