Saudi Women Redefine Post Hajj Gift Culture with Gratitude

by Lily Brown

In Saudi Arabia, the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage marks not only the end of a spiritual journey but also the beginning of a deeply rooted tradition of gift-giving. Known as *hadiyat al-hajj*, or “the pilgrim’s gift,” this practice allows pilgrims to share their experiences and blessings with loved ones.

While traditional gifts like Zamzam water and dates remain popular, a new generation of Saudi women is reshaping this custom with creative and personal touches. These modern gifts go beyond simple tokens; they reflect the pilgrim’s journey and spiritual growth.

For 30-year-old Nawal Al-Subaie, the idea was to make the gift meaningful. “I didn’t want to just hand someone a plastic bottle and say, ‘I went’,” she said. Instead, she crafted small bundles featuring Zamzam water, engraved *tasbeeh* (prayer beads), and handwritten du’a cards for each of her friends. “It was my way of letting them in on the experience,” she explained.

Many of today’s *hadiyat al-hajj* gifts carry symbolic significance. Fragrances that remind recipients of the plains of Arafat, prayer cards that evoke the stillness of Muzdalifah, or simple hand-stamped tags reading “Hajj Mabroor” in delicate calligraphy—all reflect moments that touched the pilgrim’s heart. These items are thoughtfully selected, with each gift telling its own story.

Dana Al-Hamdan, 26, found the most meaningful way to preserve the feeling of Hajj was through photographs. Rather than choosing traditional gifts, she printed instant photos taken during her pilgrimage, marking each with the exact time and date. “I gave them to my twin sister,” she said. “One was from Arafat just before Maghrib, another from the moment I arrived in Mina. They weren’t staged — they were raw and personal.” The emotional connection lasted long after the exchange. “She kept one photo in her wallet and the other on her desk,” Al-Hamdan added.

This personalized approach to *hadiyat al-hajj* has gained traction on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with videos showcasing everything from Hajj-themed gift boxes and laser-cut Qur’anic bookmarks to scented oils and memory tokens. However, it’s not about luxury or spectacle; it’s about thoughtfulness and personal meaning. Many women prepare these gifts in quiet, reflective settings, sometimes adding prayers or verses. Some choose gifts based on what holds personal significance, such as a prayer for healing or a verse symbolizing strength.

Latifa Al-Dossari, 27, created sets of prayer beads, placing them in tiny velvet bags along with notes describing what that specific day of Hajj felt like. “It was like writing someone a letter from Mina,” she said.

This shift in how *hadiyat al-hajj* is approached is part of a larger movement toward more expressive, emotionally honest spirituality. For many younger Saudi women, Hajj is no longer just a religious obligation, but a memory to share and a testimony of faith that invites others to connect with the experience.

Some consider these gifts to be souvenirs, while others view them as a silent declaration: “I remembered you,” they say. “I carried your name with me. This was not a journey I took alone.”

The real beauty of this tradition lies in the intention behind it. These gifts are not mass-produced items but carry with them time, thought, prayer, and love. For the women crafting them, the act is a final, quiet ritual—a bridge from the pilgrimage back to daily life, built with du’a and sincerity, rather than material things.

In the end, the true gift isn’t the water, the photograph, or the beads; it’s the sincerity that comes with it—the heartfelt message that says, “You were with me, even when I was away.”
