A recent Reddit post on the weddingshaming subreddit has sparked discussion over an unusual wedding faux pas, when a groom’s mother wore a wedding dress to her son’s nuptials. The post, titled “The Groom’s Mom Wore a Wedding Dress and Said It’s Tradition in Our Family,” described the shocking moment a mother took center stage at her son’s wedding by donning a full-length white gown, complete with lace sleeves, a sparkly belt, and a veil.
The guest, who was attending her cousin’s wedding, detailed the event in a Reddit thread, describing how the groom’s mother entered the hall and seemed as though she was about to walk down the aisle herself. “The bride’s face froze mid-smile, like she had just seen a ghost,” the guest said. “The photographer looked visibly confused. And the bride’s mother quietly said, ‘If I ever do this at your wedding, slap me.'”
The awkwardness didn’t end there. According to the Reddit user, the groom’s mother attempted to stand next to the bride and groom during the vows and even briefly held the bride’s bouquet. “Someone, I suspect it was a brave aunt, gently pulled her back like she was a lost guest who wandered too close,” the guest recalled.
The mother of the groom justified her choice of attire by claiming it was a family tradition for her to wear white at her son’s wedding. “At first, people assumed it was some kind of themed outfit or maybe a backup dress for the bride. But nope. It was hers,” the guest added. “She even said, ‘It’s tradition in our family for the mother of the groom to wear white.'”
At the reception, the situation continued to escalate. The groom’s mother spent the evening introducing herself as “the original woman in his life” and even asked guests how her dress looked in the lighting. In response to questions from other Reddit users, the guest revealed that the groom appeared mortified by his mother’s actions. “He looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him. Totally blindsided and embarrassed. He just kept saying ‘I’m so sorry’ over and over,” she wrote.
Other Reddit users expressed strong disapproval of the mother’s behavior, with many highlighting how inappropriate and selfish it was. One user commented, “If I was the bride, I’d expect my new husband to kick her out.” Another added, “What a horrible, selfish person. I would have laughed out loud every time she passed me.”
Despite the rocky start, the couple remains married. However, the Reddit user who shared the story noted that the groom’s mother’s actions certainly created a memorable, though not ideal, wedding experience.
