A festival celebrating the 100th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher’s birth is set to take place later this year in her hometown of Grantham, Lincolnshire.
Thatcher, the UK’s first female prime minister, was born in Grantham in 1925. She led the country from 1979 until her resignation in 1990 and died in 2013 at the age of 87.
South Kesteven District Council is organising a week-long programme of events starting 13 October. While specific details are still being developed, early suggestions include themed beers named “Iron Lady” and “Grantham Lass” to reflect her legacy.
Council leader Ashley Baxter said the event may be named “The Festival of Thatcher” and should offer a balanced view of her influence both in the UK and globally. He spoke during a finance and economic committee meeting on Tuesday.
Karen Whitfield, the council’s assistant director for leisure, culture and place, called the anniversary a significant occasion for Grantham. She said many local groups were expected to take part through events, performances, and shows.
“We want to bring everyone together to avoid overlap and ensure a coordinated approach,” she said.
Conservative councillor Mark Whittington also noted that another major celebration is approaching. The 300th anniversary of scientist Isaac Newton’s death will be marked in 2027. Newton attended The King’s School in Grantham, and the school is already preparing plans for a year-long series of events.
Baxter added that councillors had spoken with the school’s headmaster to support those preparations.
