One Ukrainian soldier, recently released from Russian captivity, marked his birthday with a heartfelt reunion. According to Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the soldier received an embroidered shirt as his first gift after being freed.
Yermak shared that the soldier’s greatest wish had always been to return home. Upon stepping off the bus, he was warmly welcomed with the words: “Welcome, hero! Happy birthday to you.” He was immediately offered the chance to change into the embroidered shirt, and as a token of appreciation, he was also given an icon.
On June 10, Ukraine and Russia conducted another prisoner swap, bringing home severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers. This exchange was part of an agreement made during negotiations in Istanbul. Among those released were the defenders of Mariupol, many of whom had been held in captivity for over three years. These soldiers, who are in urgent need of medical treatment, will be sent for further care and rehabilitation.
This exchange was the result of discussions between Ukrainian and Russian representatives on June 2 in Istanbul. Unlike previous swaps, this exchange was not a “blind exchange.” Both sides provided and verified the lists of prisoners to ensure the return of soldiers who are critically injured, ill, and younger, with ages ranging from 18 to 25.
