UNC Asheville has received a record-breaking \$5 million donation, the largest private contribution in the university’s history. This significant gift will support the university’s efforts to improve student access, success, and athletic excellence.
The funds will primarily benefit the Gateway Scholars program, which helps high-potential students from low-income backgrounds overcome financial and structural barriers. The program covers tuition, housing, meals, and other essential needs, in addition to providing access to academic support, health insurance, transportation assistance, and stipends for internships and study abroad opportunities.
The gift will also fund various initiatives aimed at improving student achievement and persistence. These include the Peer Mentors program, the Student Community Coordinator Program, the Student Success Summer Institute, and the First Year Seminar program.
Furthermore, a portion of the donation will support the Janet R. Cone Athletics Endowment, named after the long-serving UNC Asheville athletic director, helping to further enhance the university’s athletic programs.
Kirk Swenson, the university’s vice chancellor for advancement, described the donation as “transformational” for UNC Asheville. He added that the gift would also establish eight new endowed scholarships, ensuring long-term support for students.
