Kyle Clouser, a resident of Bolivia, North Carolina, doesn’t usually play the lottery. But a birthday gift of scratch-off tickets changed that—and led to a $1 million win.
“A couple weeks ago I got some tickets for my birthday,” Clouser said. “I never really play the lottery, but after that I decided to try.”
Motivated by the gift, Clouser went big and bought a $50 scratch-off ticket called $10 Million Spectacular from Han-Dee Hugo’s on Southport-Supply Road Southeast in Bolivia.
“The juices were flowing, so I chose that one,” he said with a laugh.
At first, Clouser thought he had won just $50. But after taking a closer look, he realized he had hit a $1 million prize.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw how much it really was. It was wild,” he recalled.
Clouser visited lottery headquarters on Friday to claim his prize. He had the option to receive $50,000 annually for 20 years or take a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After taxes, he received $430,514.
Clouser said the money will help support his young family.
“We have a three-year-old, so this will help make things a little easier for us as a family,” he said.
