Sri Lanka joined the global observance of World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, embracing this year’s theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The country kicked off a week-long series of activities aimed at promoting environmental protection and sustainability. The national ceremony took place at Freedom Square in Kegalle and was presided over by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Speaking to the press, Environment Minister Dr. Dhammika Patabendi stressed the urgent need to address plastic pollution. He said, “Plastic pollution threatens not only nature but also human health and community livelihoods. It is crucial that government agencies and civil society work together for a cleaner, greener future.”
The minister highlighted worrying statistics, noting that global plastic production has surpassed 430 million metric tonnes annually since 2000. Much of this plastic ends up as waste, polluting land and oceans. In Sri Lanka, daily plastic waste is estimated to exceed 900 tonnes, with only a small percentage being recycled.
Dr. Patabendi emphasized the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, which encourages collective responsibility for the environment. “From public institutions to private companies, everyone must help reduce plastic use, boost recycling efforts, and protect biodiversity,” he said.
The “National Environment Week” began on May 30 and will conclude on June 5, World Environment Day. The program includes events focused on plastic waste management, air pollution control, and the conservation of ecosystems.
