Just days before their resentencing hearing, Lyle Menendez posted a cryptic message on social media for Mother’s Day. Decades after he and his brother Erik were convicted of killing their parents, Lyle offered words of comfort to those struggling on this day.
On his personal Facebook page, Lyle wrote, “To all those who are in pain today for whatever reason… Your mother passed away; You never knew your mom; Your mother was abusive and you struggle with celebrating her; You are estranged from your mother; You wanted to be a mom but aren’t; Your child passed away; You are estranged from your child… or any other reason related to this day, we see you.”
Lyle, 57, and Erik, 54, have been imprisoned in California since 1996. Both are serving life sentences without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents.
The brothers say they acted in self-defense. They claim they shot their father, former RCA Records executive Jose Menendez, after warning him they planned to expose him as a child sex abuser, fearing he would kill them first. They also killed their mother, Mary “Kitty” Menendez, who was sitting beside Jose eating ice cream in their Beverly Hills home when the shooting occurred.
