Saudi Arabia Announces Start Of Eid Al Adha 2025 On June Sixth

by Lily Brown

DUBAI — Saudi Arabia officially declared that Wednesday, May 28, will be the first day of the Islamic month of Dhu Al Hijjah, following the sighting of the crescent moon on Tuesday evening. The announcement came after religious authorities confirmed the sighting, marking the beginning of one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar.

As per Islamic tradition, Eid Al Adha — also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice” — will fall on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah, which this year corresponds to Friday, June 6. The holiday commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, and is one of the two major Islamic holidays observed worldwide.

In connection with this, Arafat Day — the holiest day of the Hajj pilgrimage — will be observed on Thursday, June 5. On this day, millions of pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat near Mecca for prayers and reflection. For Muslims not participating in the pilgrimage, it is also a day of fasting and worship.

Eid Al Adha is traditionally celebrated with special prayers, the ritual sacrifice of animals such as sheep or goats, and the distribution of meat to family, friends, and those in need. It is a time of charity, community, and spiritual renewal.

Many countries across the Muslim world follow Saudi Arabia’s official moon sighting announcements, particularly for determining the dates of Hajj and Eid. Public and private sectors in these countries are now preparing for extended holidays to mark the occasion, with many expected to close for several days.

The announcement has also triggered a wave of travel plans, as pilgrims from around the world prepare to converge in Mecca for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which begins in the early days of Dhu Al Hijjah. The pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able to perform it.

This year’s Eid Al Adha and Hajj come as the Kingdom continues to enhance its infrastructure and services to accommodate increasing numbers of pilgrims. Saudi authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the health, safety, and spiritual fulfillment of all visitors.

With Eid Al Adha approaching, families are expected to begin preparations, from purchasing livestock for sacrifice to planning traditional meals and gatherings. The occasion serves as both a religious duty and a time for strengthening bonds among relatives and neighbors.
