Rory McIlroy shared a humorous story about a special gift from his good friend Shane Lowry following McIlroy’s Masters victory. Speaking to NBC Sports, McIlroy revealed that Lowry, who is also Irish, burst into the Augusta National bar in search of wine to celebrate.
According to McIlroy, Lowry approached the club’s sommelier and asked to buy several cases of wine. The sommelier explained that taking wine out of the club was not allowed. Lowry then requested a one-time exception. The club agreed to let him buy one case of 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild. Lowry bought the wine and brought it to McIlroy’s rental house that night as a special gift.
McIlroy also spoke about the relief and pressure release the Masters win brought him. The 35-year-old said the victory helped ease the tension he had felt aiming for a major goal. He explained that he focuses on playing his best golf every week, especially at the four major tournaments each year.
“I know what my abilities are,” McIlroy said. “If I keep showing up and trying my best each week, especially in the big events, I know I’ll have my chances.”
He added that while he aims to become the best European golfer ever, numbers only tell part of the story.
The PGA Tour action continues this week at Quail Hollow in North Carolina, with the winner set to be decided on Sunday evening.
