Tucked away in the hills of Above Rocks, St Mary’s Primary School has quietly educated generations for nearly 183 years. As one of Jamaica’s oldest schools, it holds a special place in the country’s educational history.
On Teachers’ Day 2025, the school’s legacy was celebrated in a meaningful way. The staff room, once sparse and plain, was renovated by NCB Constant Spring Financial Centre with support from the NCB Foundation. The space was transformed into a warm and welcoming area, complete with new furniture and appliances. This gives teachers a comfortable place to relax and recharge while serving their students.
Dr. Georgette Constable, principal of St Mary’s Primary, said, “This staff room has been long overdue. The gift, coming on Teachers’ Day, was powerful both in timing and meaning. It reminded us that our well-being matters too. We are deeply grateful to NCB Foundation and the team from the NCB Constant Spring Financial Centre for recognizing the need and responding with such heart.”
NCB Foundation’s McKenzie explained, “We wanted to create something personal and lasting. Teachers give so much of themselves every day, and this was our way of saying we see you, you matter.”
The renovation is part of the NCB Foundation’s wider commitment to supporting education, especially in communities with limited resources.
Jacquelin Brown-Hope, a Grade 4 teacher and vice-principal, reflected on the change. “In my 37 years at St Mary’s, I’ve seen many changes, but this gesture will stay with me. Walking into the staff room and seeing the care in every detail was incredibly moving. On Teachers’ Day especially, it made me feel honoured and appreciated in a way I’ll never forget.”
The NCB Foundation said this renovation is just the first phase of ongoing improvements for the staff lounge. In the coming months, more upgrades such as added storage and new décor will be made to further enhance the space. These efforts aim to keep the staff room a source of comfort and pride for the teachers at St Mary’s Primary.
