by Lily Brown

A Peabody musician and business owner, Jose Ilidio Pereira, was honored at the annual Heritage Day of Portugal ceremony held at the State House on Tuesday morning.

Pereira, who has been deeply involved in the Peabody Portuguese community for years, was nominated for the award by State Representative Thomas P. Walsh (D-Peabody). He joined other award recipients from across Massachusetts for a special ceremony in the House Chamber.

“I was delighted to nominate Jose and host him, his family, and friends at the State House this morning,” said Rep. Walsh. “Jose’s many contributions to the vibrant Portuguese music scene on the North Shore have greatly enriched the local Portuguese culture.”

Inspired by the Portuguese music played by his parents and neighbors, Pereira started his musical career in 1975. He performed with the band Filarmonica de Santo Antonio alongside his father and brothers. In 1981, he joined Banda Recreative Portuguese, where he eventually succeeded his father as conductor.

For five decades, Pereira’s bands have been central to the Portuguese community, performing at various events such as concerts, religious festivals, parades, and ceremonies.
