May 27, 2025 — The MLSys Group and the Hao AI Lab at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) are working to make large machine learning models, algorithms, and systems more accessible to researchers and developers. The lab is led by Hao Zhang, an assistant professor at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) within UCSD’s School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS).
Over ten years ago, while still a graduate student, Zhang received a GPU donation from NVIDIA that helped launch his AI research. Now, NVIDIA has donated a DGX B200 system—the world’s most advanced AI computing platform—to Zhang and his team in recognition of their contributions to machine learning and systems research.
Zhang, who is also affiliated with the Computer Science and Engineering Department in the Jacobs School of Engineering, expressed gratitude for the gift. He said the donation highlights the importance of their research and the growing role of the SCIDS community in advancing computing and training the next generation of AI experts.
The DGX B200 system at UCSD will speed up research in AI and machine learning system design, improve model efficiency, and support projects in areas like healthcare, robotics, and education. It will also help students gain practical experience and foster collaboration across university departments.
Rajesh K. Gupta, interim dean of SCIDS, praised NVIDIA for its support, saying the donation provides valuable infrastructure that helps train top talent and encourages researchers from the early stages of their careers.
