Prince Rupert Council Disappointed by Vandalism of Gifted Sculpture

by Lily Brown

The City of Prince Rupert is mourning the vandalism of a recently gifted chainsaw carving just days after it was installed at Totem Park. The sculpture, a wood carving titled “Survival of the Fittest” by artist Jarette Dahl, was presented by the District of Chetwynd during the North Central Local Government Association conference in May.

The carving features a mighty eagle, but vandals have removed one of its wings. Mayor Herb Pond expressed deep disappointment, calling the damage heartbreaking. He said the sculpture was meant as a symbol of friendship between the two communities and hoped for its quick restoration.

The city is currently evaluating the damage and plans to collaborate with Chetwynd officials and the artist to arrange repairs. Officials also asked the public to come forward with any information regarding the vandalism.
