Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised young Claudio Echeverri, saying it is a gift for the Argentine to be at the Etihad as he begins his Premier League career.
Echeverri, 19, made a strong impression after coming on in the 76th minute of a recent match. He came close to scoring several times and consistently challenged Crystal Palace’s defense whenever he had the ball.
Guardiola described Echeverri’s start as very encouraging. Speaking before City’s final home game of the season against Bournemouth, the manager said the player’s youth and lack of experience allow him to play without fear.
“Look at Claudio Echeverri, he played well,” Guardiola said. “He had three or four chances and every time he was near the box it was dangerous.”
“He has no past here, his mind is clear, and he has nothing to defend from before. Maybe in two years, that will change.”
“When you arrive, you’re eager. Later, you expect more respect because of what you have done, but Claudio does not have that yet.”
“He played well. For him, it’s a gift to play here, and he wants to prove he can perform in the Premier League.”
“Will he be able to? I don’t know. Will we be here to help him? We will try.”
“That’s the situation.”
