GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – With Mother’s Day around the corner, Americans are expected to spend more than ever to celebrate moms and mother figures across the country.
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), total Mother’s Day spending is projected to hit \$34.1 billion this year, up from \$33.5 billion in 2023. Flowers remain the most popular gift choice, with 74% of shoppers planning to purchase them.
Consumers are also expected to spend more per person. The average shopper will spend around \$259.04 on gifts and celebrations, which is about \$5 more than last year’s average.
Caroline Smith, manager at Wildflower Florist in Greenville, says she has already noticed the increased demand.
“People are spending more and asking for more specialty flowers,” Smith said. “It’s very busy right now, with Mother’s Day, graduations, and appreciation weeks all happening at once.”
Smith encourages customers to order early to avoid the last-minute rush. “The feedback and gratitude we get from customers make it all worth it,” she added.
For many, Mother’s Day is about more than gifts. Meredith Reames, a student at East Carolina University, said the real gift is time spent together. “I’m just happy to be with my mom. It’s a special time, especially right at the end of the school year,” she said.
Beyond flowers, the NRF says 73% of shoppers will buy greeting cards, and 61% plan to treat their moms to a special outing such as dinner or brunch. Jewelry is also high on the list, with an expected \$6.8 billion in sales.
Whether it’s a bouquet, a heartfelt card, or quality time, families across the country are preparing to show their appreciation in big ways this Mother’s Day.
