An Elton John tribute act was a highlight as Templars Square Shopping Centre in Cowley celebrated its 60th anniversary last weekend.
The milestone event took place on Saturday, May 10, attracting over 1,000 shoppers. Guests enjoyed live performances of classic hits, including a special rendition of Happy Birthday by the tribute act.
Templeton the dragon, the centre’s mascot, made appearances throughout the day, handing out balloons and posing for photos with visitors.
Local historian Maurice East led guided walking tours, giving attendees a glimpse into Cowley’s past. A classic car display featuring vehicles built in Cowley was also on show.
In addition, visitors could participate in a giant globe activity with a chance to win a £100 shopping centre gift voucher. Children enjoyed free face painting, and cupcakes were handed out to mark the celebration.
Carla Scaroni, centre manager at Templars Square, said the event was a great way to connect with the local community. “People of all ages enjoyed the music, entertainment, and the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane through the centre’s photo archives and classic car display,” she said.
Scaroni added, “This anniversary was a celebration for everyone who shops, works, and lives in the area. Thank you to everyone who helped make it so special.”
Visitors were invited to share their memories of the centre, which opened in 1965. A collection of historic photos is currently on display at the centre and will remain until the end of May.
