Two sisters from Northumberland have launched an online gift shop designed to spread joy, humor, and positivity, following a life-changing diagnosis. Steph and Natalie Wood, based in Hexham, had long hoped to start a business together. That dream became reality after Steph was diagnosed with MOGAD, a rare autoimmune disease, which forced her to step away from full-time work as a personal trainer.
In response, the sisters created Laughing Sisters, an online gift shop that officially began trading in November 2024. Their website went live in January, offering a variety of quirky and thoughtful gifts intended to lift spirits and bring smiles.
Natalie Wood explained the inspiration behind their venture, saying, “There’s nothing better than making someone smile, whether it’s with an inside joke or a thoughtful gift. That’s what Laughing Sisters is all about.”
While the business primarily operates online, the sisters have also taken part in local markets and events, giving them the opportunity to meet customers face-to-face. To help build the business, they turned to the Northumberland Small Business Service (NSBS), where they received support through marketing and SEO courses, website development advice, and a start-up grant.
With their shared vision and community support, the Wood sisters are hoping to grow Laughing Sisters into a business that continues to bring positivity to others, one gift at a time.
