The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels (HKETO, Brussels) supported the sixth edition of the Barcelona International Dragon Boat Fest, held from May 23 to 25 in Castelldefels, a coastal town near Barcelona, Spain.
Speaking at the awards ceremony on May 25, Paul Leung, Assistant Representative of HKETO, Brussels, highlighted the deeper meaning behind dragon boat racing. “It’s not just a sport; it celebrates sportsmanship, culture, and community spirit,” he said. He also described Hong Kong as a vibrant city that balances its global status in trade, finance, and logistics with a strong focus on sports and recreation.
Leung noted that with the opening of the new Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong is preparing to host more international sporting and cultural events. “These developments reflect the city’s growing energy and diversity,” he said.
He also encouraged visitors to explore Hong Kong in person, inviting them to experience its lively arts scene, world-renowned cuisine, scenic nature, sandy beaches, and unique urban spirit.
This year’s festival welcomed over 700 participants and featured 30 dragon boat teams representing 16 countries and regions. In addition to the races, attendees had a chance to paddle a dragon boat sponsored by HKETO, Brussels. A Hong Kong-themed booth also provided information about the city’s attractions and culture.
The event was not only a celebration of athleticism but also a platform for cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Hong Kong and the international community through sport.
