A man was arrested in Lucknow for stealing a gold chain from a woman. He committed the crime to gift the chain to his wife, who works as a police constable.
The incident happened on May 22. The victim, Krishna Devi, was on her way to her brother-in-law’s house on Lokbandhu Hospital Road. Suddenly, a man on a motorcycle approached from behind. The accused, Shubham Rajput, grabbed her gold chain and fled.
Police reviewed footage from about 500 CCTV cameras to track the suspect. On May 26, they arrested Rajput. During questioning, he admitted to the crime. He said he had lost his wife’s gold chain, which she wore during a temple visit. To replace it, he snatched the chain from Krishna Devi as a gift for his wife, who is posted in Ayodhya.
Rajput revealed that he previously worked as a salesman in a jewelry shop. Later, he opened his own store, but it failed, leading to financial problems. Police said this crisis pushed him to commit the theft.
The police team that caught Rajput will receive a reward of Rs 25,000.
