Rayner McCullough, a longtime community pillar in Barrie, has always quietly given back, believing it’s simply the right thing to do. Now, at the age of 95, he is marking the milestone with a generous \$95,000 donation to the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) to support the Child and Youth Mental Health Program.
“This felt like the right time to give,” said Rayner. “I’ve had a full life, and I believe in giving back to the place that’s been part of it.”
Rayner’s donation comes at a critical time when mental health challenges among children and teens are at an all-time high. Last year, 75% of RVH’s admissions for children aged 11 to 17 were due to mental health issues. His gift will help fund the creation of therapeutic spaces and specialized programs aimed at providing young people in the region with the care they need. The goal is clear: to provide life-saving support close to home, helping kids build resilience and move forward with confidence.
“This donation helps us meet a growing need,” said Gail Hunt, President and CEO of RVH. “Mental health care is just as crucial as care for cancer or heart disease. Rayner’s support ensures that every young person can receive timely, compassionate care close to home.”
This is not the first time Rayner has contributed to RVH or Barrie. Known for his lifelong dedication to the community, his legacy spans healthcare, local history, and the quiet efforts that unite people. For Rayner, RVH represents the heart of Simcoe Muskoka.
With his birthday gift, Rayner hopes to encourage others to give back in whatever way they can.
“Whether it’s your time, energy, or resources—if you can give something, you should,” he said. “This place has given me a lot, and I think many people feel the same way about RVH.”
Pamela Ross, CEO of the RVH Foundation, praised Rayner’s contributions. “Rayner leads with quiet conviction. He doesn’t just support this community—he moves it forward. His gift is a call to action and a reminder that generosity, done with heart, can change lives. We are proud to stand alongside him.”
