Country music legend George Strait honored a severely wounded military veteran by presenting him with the key to a new home during his concert in Pittsburgh on May 31. The veteran, Sergeant Derek Austin, is a Purple Heart recipient who was injured in Afghanistan when his convoy was attacked. He suffered serious shrapnel wounds, as well as traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.
At the concert, a representative from the Military Warriors Support Foundation introduced Austin to the audience and shared his story. The representative then announced that Austin would be receiving a new house as a way to say thank you for his service. The crowd responded with cheers and applause.
Strait stood beside Austin and handed him an oversized key to the new home, encouraging the audience to cheer for the veteran rather than himself. This generous gift is part of Strait’s ongoing work with the Military Warriors Support Foundation. Over the years, he has frequently supported military veterans by helping to provide homes, drawing attention and praise each time he contributes.
