Xiaomi recently faced backlash after reducing the power of its SU7 Ultra electric car by 600 CV. The car was initially promoted with an impressive 1,548 CV (about 1,526 horsepower) and a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds. Priced below rivals like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan, the SU7 Ultra sold out quickly.
However, Xiaomi later revealed that using the full 1,548 CV on public roads was unsafe. They released an over-the-air update that limited power to 900 CV in normal driving. To unlock full power, owners had to complete a “qualifying lap” on an approved racetrack through what Xiaomi called “Ranking Mode.”
Many customers were unhappy, saying they paid for a high-performance EV but received a less thrilling version. Complaints spread widely on social media and forums. Xiaomi then backtracked, promising to restore full power without restrictions.
To apologize, Xiaomi is now offering gifts valued at about €7,600 (\$8,000) to all SU7 Ultra buyers. These gifts are meant as compensation but are tied to Xiaomi’s ecosystem rather than direct cash.
Spanish outlet El Confidencial reported that the first gift is a free carbon fiber hood with dual vents, worth 42,000 yuan (around €5,150 or \$5,600). This hood will be given to customers who bought the car before May 10, 2025. Those who already ordered the hood during purchase will also receive the second compensation.
The second gift is a loyalty points bonus worth 20,000 yuan (about €2,450 or \$2,400). These points can be used at Xiaomi’s official stores for services, upgrades, or other products.
While the \$8,000 package shows Xiaomi’s apology, it also helps keep customers engaged without the company spending cash directly. Xiaomi aims to maintain its reputation as it continues to develop innovative vehicles.
Most customers have accepted the apology gifts, but the company warned that adding the carbon fiber hood may slow production. Manufacturing the hood is complex and could delay upcoming deliveries.
