Mary Jung had a Mother’s Day any MLB mom would dream of. She watched her two sons, Josh and Jace Jung, play against each other at Comerica Park on Sunday. Adding to the special moment, Mary threw out the first pitch wearing a custom half-and-half Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers jersey. Their father, Jeff, also wore a similar jersey.
“My heart is just exploding,” Mary said during the Rangers’ broadcast. “I couldn’t ask for a better Mother’s Day gift. To watch them all in the same place, living their dream, doing what they love—I couldn’t be more proud.”
Josh, the older brother, is in his fourth season with the Rangers. Despite facing multiple injuries such as a broken thumb and wrist, he has persevered through his career. Jace, the younger brother, was called up by the Tigers last fall. He began this season in Triple-A but was recalled to the major league roster early in the season.
Their matchup marks only the seventh time in 45 years that siblings have played against each other in an MLB game on Mother’s Day.
When Mary first saw the schedule, she said to the Dallas Morning News, “My mama heart just melted. But I didn’t want to talk about it in case something changed. I thought about getting a split jersey. I found a hotel but wouldn’t book it. I worked hard not to say anything because I didn’t want any evidence I was even thinking about it.”
The day became even more memorable when Josh hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. That helped the Rangers secure a 6-1 win over the Tigers.
