When 10-year-old Sophie decided to skip birthday presents and focus on helping others, she not only found joy in giving but also inspired those around her.
Like many children her age, Sophie had always associated birthdays with cake, balloons, and a stack of presents. But this year, she had a different idea. She looked at her mother and said, “I have enough. I want to help people instead.”
Her parents were surprised and deeply moved. They began looking for ways to turn her birthday into something more meaningful and soon discovered Share Your Wish, a platform that allows families to turn part of a birthday gift fund into charitable donations.
The organization helps children learn the value of generosity and social responsibility while still allowing them to enjoy a celebration. Sophie chose to support the ALS Network, a cause close to her family, and another group that helps people in need. Through Share Your Wish, a custom birthday page was created where guests could RSVP and choose to contribute either to Sophie’s modest gift fund or the donation pool.
Instead of receiving new toys or clothes, Sophie’s birthday gifts are helping real people. And she’s thrilled. She’s been telling everyone — teachers, friends, even strangers — about her birthday project. “I’m helping people with ALS for my birthday!” she tells them proudly.
Watching her take ownership of this cause has been more rewarding than any traditional celebration. It’s not about what she’s receiving — it’s about what she’s giving.
Share Your Wish was founded by parents who wanted to reduce the focus on material gifts and encourage values like empathy and purpose. The platform helps children make a difference, while cutting down on waste and excess. It teaches them that birthdays can be about compassion and community.
Through this experience, Sophie has learned that a birthday doesn’t have to be about getting more things. It can be about giving back and lifting others up. She may be unwrapping fewer gifts this year, but her heart is full — and she’s giving a gift to others that will last far beyond her special day.
After all, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the chance to give to others.
