Activist groups are organizing nationwide protests on June 14 to coincide with a military parade planned by former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. The parade is being held to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.
While the group Refuse Fascism initially claimed to be behind the protest effort, Newsweek reported that the main organizer is actually a group called “No Kings.” They are working alongside other organizations, including Black Voters Matter and the Declaration for American Democracy.
According to Newsweek, the organizers aim to draw attention away from the parade by mobilizing volunteers to gather in cities across the country “everywhere Trump isn’t,” carrying the message “no thrones, no crowns, no kings.” It is unclear how many people will join the demonstrations.
Protests against Trump have been a frequent part of his time in the public eye, starting with his inauguration in 2017. However, most of these events have remained relatively small in size. Few have matched the scale and impact of the nationwide demonstrations that followed the killing of George Floyd in 2020.
The June 14 military parade is expected to be a major event, featuring tanks, thousands of troops, and military aircraft flying over the nation’s capital.
