WESTWOOD, N.J. — The Borough of Westwood recently honored longtime resident Florence Guarneri Van Eck as she celebrated her 100th birthday, marking a century of life filled with family, community, and dedication.
Florence, a Westwood resident since 1977, was joined by family, friends, and local officials for a celebration at Granita Grille. Mayor Ray Arroyo, Councilwoman Beth Dell, and District 39 Assemblyman John Azzariti attended the event, paying tribute to her life and legacy.
Councilwoman Dell read a proclamation from the Mayor’s Office, highlighting key moments in Florence’s life. Married at 19 to Harold Van Eck, Florence shared 78 years with her husband and raised a large, loving family that includes seven children, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She also spent 25 years managing the men’s department at Gimbels in Garden State Plaza.
Florence is known not only for her dedication to family and work but also for her cooking. The proclamation praised her Italian tomato sauce, her turkey stuffing with meat and pignoli nuts, and her homemade Concord grape jelly, a tradition she continues.
Mayor Arroyo reflected on the celebration in a public message, calling it a moving tribute to a woman who has inspired generations. “All the words paled in comparison to the love that filled the room and, no doubt, Florence’s heart with pure joy,” he said. “I can’t think of a better birthday gift.”
The Borough of Westwood extended its heartfelt congratulations to Florence, wishing her continued health, happiness, and many more joyful moments.
