PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD – The Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra will celebrate its 90th anniversary on May 21 with a full day of activities at its historic home, Hell Yard. The event, themed “Pushing 90,” will honor the band’s rich legacy while showcasing its ongoing contributions to steelpan music and culture.
Starting at 6 a.m., All Stars Day will welcome fans and visitors to enjoy performances from both the senior and youth orchestras. The day will be filled with music ranging from classical to calypso, reflecting the band’s versatility and deep musical roots.
Cecilia Tomson, director of operations at the All Stars Academy, said the band would highlight its journey through decades of innovation, particularly the legacy of pioneer Neville Jules, whose experimental work with the national instrument helped shape modern pan music.
The celebration will offer a wide array of attractions, including breakfast and lunch options, homemade wines, an art exhibition by the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society, and pop-up shops. Visitors can also access services provided by orchestra members, such as hairstyling, waxing, plumbing, and painting, along with merchandise from the band’s gift shops.
All Stars will also launch its 2026 Carnival presentation, Sailors Ashore in Pan. Known for its iconic sailor mas, the band made history by winning Band of the Year titles in both 2014 and 2015—the only steelband to do so since 1963. In 2025, they secured second place.
An awards ceremony will recognize individuals and organizations that have played key roles in the orchestra’s success. A special lounge area will screen documentaries and provide space for guests to relax, talk, and reflect on the band’s long-standing impact.
Founded in 1935 in the area known as Hell Yard and originally called the Hell Yard Boys, the exact date of the band’s formation remains unclear. However, January 1 is traditionally marked as its anniversary with a day of thanksgiving.
Trinidad All Stars continues to thrive as one of the leading steelbands in the country, combining tradition with innovation as it steps into its 90th year.
